Membership Sites 101: Part 3

Do It Yourself

It’s entirely possible for you to build your own membership site. If you don’t have a CRM yet, create an ActiveCampaign account, download activeMember360, open a hosting account and install WordPress.

WP Beginner has some great content, all free, about getting started with WordPress. ActiveMember has comprehensive docs, as does ActiveCampaign.

There are some great WordPress Themes that make things easy: Divi, or BuddyBoss. There are online courses galore for building a membership site (#membersitemeta).

Resources like upwork, 99designs and fiverr are great ways to get work done at phenomenal rates (i.e. Filipino/Indian rates), and if you know how to direct it, you can end up with something great for a minimal outlay.

It’s Your Show

But that’s the caveat: it’s your show. You’ll have to be confident directing everything from design to launch strategy. You’ll need to know the difference between a designer and developer, and when to use which one. You’ll have to learn how to use Infusionsoft or ActiveCampaign. You’ll have to learn how to set up activeMember or iMember.

Learning everything you need to know so you can tell people what to do, then managing the project to get it built by multiple contractors whose first language isn’t English, is also a catastrophic time suck. And let’s be honest, it’s a pain in the arse.

Don’t Do It Yourself

Despite the plethora of DIY options out there, and the relative ease with which this stuff can be learned, many people still choose to work with an agency to get their site built.

An agency (*cough* pitch alert) like WPWoof! have multiple skills across their team, and are able to deliver on:

  • graphic design
  • website development
  • product development
  • launch strategy
  • CRM implementation
  • Email Marketing
  • SEO
  • paid ads
  • analytics
  • growth

Basically, the full spectrum of everything you need not just to build a membership website, but to build a product that will sell and scale. All you have to do is create the content.

Building a successful online product is a journey: check out Cycling-Inform’s case study, and How much should a membership site cost?
